Common Ground - 014
For the last few weeks I have been testing glazes made from different ratios of clay, ash and water mixed together and then fired at different temperatures in different kilns and environments.
These cups, bowls, plates and one pot show ranges of glazes made from 100% clay to 50% clay / 50% ash, in 10% increments. So 90% clay / 10% ash, 80/20, 70/30 and so on. Then fired in both electric and gas, oxidation and reduction, with ash blown in, or not, and ranging in temperature from cone 5 to over cone 12 (about 2175 to 2450 degrees F). The results are very promising and I will choose specific recipes to use and start glazing and firing the pieces that have been waiting for this stage in the project. The plan is to be done with all of the firings sometime this fall, and then start using the pots late this year or early next year for meals and events. The end of the long first phase of the project, the making part, and the beginning of the long second phase, the using part.
